Brian Scampton

The artist Brian Scampton has been professionally painting landscapes and still lifes in oils for many years. He has held two solo exhibitions so far; one in the Heritage Library, Derry in 1999, and one in Tullyarvin Mill, Buncrana, in 2004. He has also participated in many group exhibitions. In addition, he has participated in group exhibitions in Japan, where he lived from 1989 to 1994.

The artist, originally from Derry, in Northern Ireland, has been deeply interested in painting from an early age and was trained in oil painting at the Technical College in Derry. He has studied the history of art at university level and currently gives talks on The History of European Painting at various venues.

He took up painting as a full time profession not long after returning to Derry from Japan in the 90s.

Brian is interested in depicting the quality, contrasts and play of light on objects in landscapes and in still lifes. In his works he manages to evoke, through the atmospheric qualities of local landscapes some particular mood in a sensitive and personal way. His most recent works have as their subject the coastal regions of Inishowen.

Another area of speciality for Brian is the urban landscape, or street scenes, usually of Derry, which he often depicts in a timeless and dreamy mood, of mystery and reminiscence.

Brian is currently resident in Inishowen and gives basic and advanced painting lessons to small painting groups there and in Derry.
